Meet one of the most unusual tribes of the world.
In Africa,
Southern Ethiopia near its border with Sudan is the isolated Omo valley, this is the exact location where the Mursi tribe are settled. There are an estimated
10,000 people in the Mursi tribe. The Mursi are sedentary rather than
nomadic. The Mursi have their own language called Mursi, which is
classified as one of the Surmic languages. The Mursi have a reputation
for being one of the more aggressive African tribes and are famous for
their stick fighting ceremony donga.
Here are some facts that Hakika Blog have been able to gather, we hope you like them:
-1- All men of this tribe have Kalashnikov rifles (AK47), illegally transferred for them through the border.
-2- They are considered the most aggressive ethnic group.
-3- Women to wear large clay or wooden discs or ‘plates’ in their lower lips.
-4- A Girl's Lip is pierced by her mother or one of her kinswomen at the age of 15 or 16.
-5- Piercings are done about 6 to 12 months before marriage and a wooden peg is inserted until the wound has healed.
-6- Two front lower teeth are removed to support the lip-plates when fixed.
-7- Mursi girls of age 13 to 18 decide for themselves whether to have the piercing & wear a lip plate or not.
-8- The size of their lip plate indicates the number of cattle paid as the bride price, so the bigger the plate the more the cattle......NUTSSSSS!
-9- Mursi women adorn themselves with lip plates.
-10- Having a piercing and a lip plate was originally done as a tactics to keep-off slave hunters/traders. The slave traders find them very UGLY, so they don't capture the ones with pierced lips.
